What Is an IP Rating?
IP stands for Ingress Protection. It's an international standard (IEC 60529) that tells you exactly how well a device is protected against dust and water. Every outdoor solar light should have one — and knowing what the numbers mean can save you from buying a light that fails in the first rainstorm.
The IP code has two digits: the first covers dust/solid protection, the second covers water protection.

Which IP Rating Do You Need?
IP65 — The Standard for Most Gardens
IP65 is the minimum you should accept for any outdoor solar light. It handles rain, garden hoses, and general outdoor conditions without issue. The vast majority of quality solar garden lights, wall lights, and pathway lights are IP65-rated.
Best for: Pathways, walls, fences, driveways, patios, general garden use.
IP67 — For Wet or Flood-Prone Areas
If your garden has a pond, water feature, or an area that floods after heavy rain, IP67 gives you the extra protection of short-term submersion tolerance. It's also a good choice if you live in a region with very heavy seasonal rainfall.
Best for: Near water features, low-lying garden areas, coastal gardens with sea spray.
IP68 — For Underwater Use
IP68 is designed for lights that will be permanently or regularly submerged. Think pond lights, underwater garden features, or fountain illumination. The exact depth and duration rating varies by manufacturer, so always check the product spec sheet.
Best for: Pond lights, underwater decorative lighting, fountain lights.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying IP44 lights for outdoor use — these are only suitable for covered patios or indoor use. Heavy rain will damage them.
- Assuming higher is always better — IP68 lights are more expensive and unnecessary for standard garden use. IP65 is perfectly sufficient for 90% of gardens.
- Ignoring the first digit — the dust rating matters too, especially in dry or sandy climates. A fully dust-tight rating (6) prevents particles from clogging the solar panel or LED components.
